Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reiterated that Pakistan had “a significant and historic role” in the process that helped defuse the tensions between Iran and the United States and hoped that the recent diplomatic process would bring “peace to the region.”

The prime minister addressed the National Assembly and stated that Pakistan had made efforts to reach out to both sides to promote dialogue.

He told members of the national assembly that Iran few days ago signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States.

Shehbaz Sharif pointed out that a ceasefire between Iran and the United States had been announced and that technical negotiations would go on for the next 60 days.

He was confident that the agreement would help to forge “durable peace and stability”.

The prime minister congratulated the National Assembly, its members and the Pakistani people for the “positive diplomatic achievement.”

He said Pakistan’s name was heard all over the world and its image was prominently featured on the front pages of major newspapers.

Shehbaz Sharif, when talking about regional developments, also told the House that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian would be visiting Pakistan on Tuesday.

The premier called on the political leaders to refrain from any controversy on an important day in the country.

He “responded” to the criticism of opposition by saying that if their investigations of elections are to be carried out, then it’s time to look at the general election of 2018.

He further said that if the government that won in the 2018 polls was legal then the current one should also be acknowledged as legal.
