Shooting at Brown University in US kills at least 2

Web desk: Police and school officials in the United States (US)are asking residents of Providence, Rhode Island, to shelter in place after an active shooter was reported on the campus of Brown University on Saturday, December 13.

“At least 2 people have been killed, and several others injured in a shooting at Brown University, a law enforcement source told the Associated Press,” reports Police1.

“No shooter is in custody, the university said, and the shelter-in-place order is still active,” reports CNN.

Multiple people are believed to have been injured in the attack. Some reports say the number is as high as 20.

Around 4:22 pm local time (21:22 GMT), the Ivy League university issued an emergency update that there was a gunman near the Barus and Holley engineering lab.

Later, at 5:27 pm local time (22:27 GMT), the school reported that shots had been fired near Governor Street, approximately two blocks away.

Police and school officials have asked residents and students at Brown University to shelter in place after reports of an active shooter on campus.

“Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice,” the university said in its update.

“Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself.”

Multiple people are believed to have been injured in the attack.

The university issued an emergency alert around 4:22 pm local time, saying a gunman was near the Barus and Holley engineering lab.

Students and staff were instructed to lock doors, silence phones, and remain hidden.

The Providence Police Department confirmed multiple people were shot near the campus.

Earlier, the university had mistakenly announced that a suspect was in custody. It was later clarified that police are still searching for the suspect(s).

It was clarified, “Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s).”

US President Donald Trump also retracted a similar claim on his platform, Truth Social. And confirmed that the FBI is on the scene.

“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island,” Trump also wrote. “The FBI is on the scene.”

Law enforcement remains on site, and the incident is under investigation.

The shooting occurred as Brown University approaches the end of its semester.

Classes ended Thursday, and final exams continue until December 20.

Brown University, founded in 1764, is the seventh oldest university in the United States. And it is a member of the Ivy League. It has a student body of around 11,000.
