Sindh Police in Karachi have extended the deadline for installing government-approved vehicle number plates until April 1, 2026, giving motorists more time to comply with the requirement.
A police spokesperson said the decision was taken to facilitate vehicle owners who are still in the process of obtaining the official plates.
Deadline extended
The two-day extension was announced by Azad Khan, the Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Karachi.
Officials said the move aims to reduce inconvenience for citizens and allow smoother implementation.
A citywide crackdown against vehicles with private, decorative, or non-approved number plates will now begin on April 1, instead of the earlier date of March 30, 2026.
Crackdown planned after deadline
Police have warned that once the deadline passes, strict action will be taken against violators.
This will include fines and possible legal proceedings.
Authorities also said that drivers without a valid driving licence will face penalties as part of the broader enforcement campaign.
Security concerns behind the move
Officials say the use of non-standard or decorative number plates makes it harder for law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles, raising security concerns.
According to Sindh Police, standardised plates are an important part of improving vehicle tracking and supporting routine policing across the province.
Public advisory
Motorists have been advised to ensure their vehicles carry only official number plates and to complete the process before the new deadline.
Police say no further extensions are expected, and enforcement will be carried out across the city without exception once the deadline expires.
