Smog in Lahore has turned hazardous as the Air Quality Index (AQI) hits 802 in Allama Iqbal Town.

The overall AQI of Lahore is recorded at 501, making it the second most polluted city after Delhi, as of 8:26 pm PKT on Saturday.

On December 12, the AQI peaked at 497, which made Lahore the most polluted city on a global level.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the air quality will remain unhealthy in the coming days.

To counter the smog effects, anti-smog squads have been mobilised across Lahore, and strict inspections of industrial units have begun.

A spokesperson for the Environment Protection Department said that, on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a comprehensive action plan to curb smog is being implemented, as per reports.

Smog guns are operating continuously at spots with high AQI levels, while regular water sprinkling is underway in various parts of the city.

The Local Government Department, Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), and WASA have intensified joint efforts to clean and wash roads, launching a large-scale road-washing campaign in and around the city.

It is pertinent to mention that Lahore had a much better November this year, with less smog compared to the hazardous levels of 2024.

Pakistan Air Quality Initiative (PAQI) confirmed a dramatic 56 per cent reduction in daily peak pollution intensity.

In November, the city recorded no days with an AQI above 300, the “Hazardous” level that affected the city last November.
