Sohail Afridi likely to be Pakistan’s poorest Chief Minister

Sohail Afridi is poised to be the poorest CM of KP

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s nominated Chief Minister Sohail Afridi maybe the province’s poorest chief executive so far, as per the details of his assets.

According to official documents, Afridi’s total assets stand at Rs 578,000. The documents show that his assets were valued at Rs376,000 in the financial year 2023, marking an increase of only Rs200,000 in one year.

Surprisingly, the nominated CM neither owns a house nor any business. His declared possessions include a refrigerator, a washing machine, and two bank accounts, the documents reveal.

Officials say efforts are underway to obtain Afridi’s version on the matter.

Afridi, nominated by the ruling coalition for the top post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, comes from a middle-class family of the Shalobar tribe in the Khyber district.

He is known for his strong grassroots political connections and has been linked with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) since his student years through the Insaf Student Federation (ISF), where he once served as the provincial president.

Afridi stepped into mainstream politics in February 2024, winning a seat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from PK-70 (Khyber-II) as an independent candidate.

Following his victory, he joined PTI and was appointed special assistant to the chief minister on communications and works (C&W). Later, after a cabinet reshuffle, he was promoted to provincial minister and given the Higher Education Department portfolio.
