Spain ended a 16-year wait for World Cup glory by defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 final match.
The final match was played at MetLife Stadium in the US state of New Jersey.
Both sides gave a tough time to each other, with Spain enjoying more possession and creating the better chances throughout the match.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock during regulation time despite several opportunities, as the match remained goalless after 90 minutes.
Spain stepped up the pressure in extra time and eventually found the breakthrough in the second period when Torres scored the decisive goal to put his side ahead.
Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser but was unable to break down Spain’s disciplined defence, as the European side held on to secure a historic victory.
The triumph marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and their first since lifting the trophy in 2010, while Argentina failed to retain the title they won at the previous World Cup.
Spain’s players and coaching staff celebrated jubilantly at the final whistle, with thousands of supporters inside the stadium joining the celebrations. Fans across Spain also marked the team’s return to the top of world football.
The victory capped an impressive campaign for Spain, whose disciplined defending and attacking play saw them reclaim the FIFA World Cup trophy after a 16-year wait.
