As Eid ul Azha 2026 approaches, the main concern for many of the households is how can they safely store sacrificial meat so it stays fresh for weeks or even months.
Experts say that with proper freezing and preservation methods, meat can even last up to a year. Here, you can learn ways to keep the meat fresh and usable.
Freezer
In freezer storage, experts advise that you should pack the meat carefully before placing it in the freezer to avoid exposure to air.
They recommend using freezer safe plastic bags, aluminium foil, or airtight containers. It is also better to remove bones before freezing because they take up extra space and put pressure on the freezer.
Using freezer paper or separating layers between pieces helps stop meat from sticking together. Freezer temperature should be kept at 0°F or lower for long term storage.
Type of meat
In terms of storage time, food specialists say raw meat can usually be kept frozen for 4 to 12 months.
Minced meat should ideally be used within 3 months. Cooked meat can stay safe for up to 3 months if properly frozen.
What to do in case of load shedding
In case of power outages or no freezer access, experts say that you should use insulated coolers as a temporary solution.
Ice should be placed at the bottom, then meat should be added, and more ice should be placed on top. The ice needs to be replaced regularly as it melts.
In salt preservation methods, experts say meat can also be preserved using curing salt. The meat should be fully covered with salt. Then it should be stored in airtight containers in a cool place between 36°F and 40°F.
This method can preserve meat for about a month. But still, the excess salt should be washed off before cooking.
In safe defrosting methods, you should thaw frozen meat by placing sealed packets in cold water and then changing the water every 30 minutes.
They also suggest checking the smell and colour before cooking. Any bad smell or unusual colour means the meat should not be used.
