Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry has passed away after a prolonged illness at 71.

His funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow in his native village of Chichiyan, Mirpur, at 3pm.

The AJK president’s media advisor, Kamal Haider, confirmed the news.

According to some reports, he was suffering from liver cancer, and he passed away in Islamabad, where he was getting treatment.

He was elected as the president in 1996 and 2021.

Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry is the son of the late Kashmiri leader Chaudhary Noor Hussain Jatt, who also founded the Azad Muslim Conference along with Sardar Ibrahim Khan, but after Sardar Ibrahim Khan left the party, he led it alone. 

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his grief over Chaudhry’s passing and prayed that he receive “forgiveness and a high place in heaven”, a statement from the Presidency said.

It added that President Zardari also expressed his sympathy to Chaudhry’s family, deeming his national and political services “invaluable”.
