Summer holidays extended till August 31 under new academic plan

Will Punjab schools announce early summer vacations due to heatwave

Summer vacations have been officially announced for educational institutions in the plain areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid intense heat across the province.

According to the provincial Education Department, summer holidays will now be observed from May 22, 2026, to August 31, 2026.

Earlier notifications had stated that vacations in the plain areas would begin on June 1 and continue till August 31, but the schedule has now been revised and brought forward.

Officials said the decision to start holidays earlier was influenced by the overlap of multiple holidays, including the Eid ul Azha holidays and the regular weekend holidays falling on May 22.

As a result, students in the plain regions of the province will begin their summer break earlier than initially planned, while the reopening date of August 31, 2026, will remain unchanged.

Summer vacations schedule announced for Punjab schools

The Punjab government has finalised the schedule for summer vacations for schools across the province.

Under the plan approved by the provincial cabinet, summer holidays will start on May 22 and continue until August 23.

Educational institutions across Punjab will reopen on August 24 after the summer break. The decision was taken as part of the government’s official summer vacation plan.

Cabinet approves summer vacation schedule

The provincial cabinet has formally approved the dates for summer vacations. Schools and other educational institutions across Punjab will remain closed from May 22 to August 23.

It is worth mentioning that in April, the provincial education minister shared important details regarding summer holidays for educational institutions in 2026.

Rana Sikandar Hayat had dismissed ongoing speculation about the vacations and clarified that the final decision would be taken after May.

He also revealed that the provincial government is considering reducing summer vacations by 15 to 20 days this year in order to compensate for educational losses.

“The government wants to increase the number of teaching days in the academic year from 180 to 190 to ensure the timely completion of the syllabus. Not only summer vacations, but a proposal to reduce winter holidays by five to six days is also under consideration,” he said.

He also clarified a circulating news about the Friday holiday in schools.

He said that the Friday holiday is not permanent and soon the educational institutions will return to their regular schedules.
