The recent social media claims that TikTok LIVE has been banned in Pakistan by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have raised concerns among the public.
The viral claims are misleading, as the feature has never been officially available in the country.
According to senior sources, TikTok LIVE was not launched for Pakistani users when the platform resumed operations following previous suspensions.
While the main TikTok application remains accessible, the LIVE feature continues to be unavailable because of a platform-level restriction imposed by TikTok, not by the PTA.
Sources said the PTA has not blocked TikTok LIVE. Instead, the feature remains disabled for users in Pakistan as part of TikTok’s regional availability policy.
Officials also dismissed claims that non-PTA-approved mobile phones can unlock TikTok LIVE, saying there is no evidence that a device’s PTA registration status affects access to the feature.
According to industry sources, some Pakistani content creators appear to access TikTok LIVE through unofficial methods, including the use of foreign SIM cards, virtual private networks (VPNs), modified versions of the TikTok application or TikTok LIVE Studio configured with overseas internet connections.
Sources added that if users in Pakistan are earning revenue through TikTok LIVE despite the restriction, they may be doing so through unauthorised means.
They said the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) could examine any unregulated inflow of funds linked to such activity.
Recent resolutions introduced in provincial assemblies calling for a nationwide ban on TikTok do not affect the availability of TikTok LIVE, as the feature has never been officially launched in Pakistan.
TikTok has previously stated that LIVE is not supported for users in Pakistan, and has not explained how its regional eligibility system operates.
