PESHAWAR: With the reopening of Torkham Border on Saturday, a large number of Afghan migrants have started returning home.
Large scanners have been installed and all security and custom official staff is present at the border to facilitate the return of Afghan refugees back to their home land.
The border has been closed for the past 20 days due to conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan over the TTP.
The Torkham border has remained closed to all traffic since October 11 amid rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The route will stay shut for bilateral trade as well.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said on Tuesday that the government will decide later on reopening the border for trade between the two countries.
The Pak-Afghan Torkham Border is a busy land crossing between Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.
It connects both countries through the Grand Trunk Road.
The border is currently closed for trade and travel due to recent clashes and security tensions between Pakistani and Afghan forces.
Because of the closure, hundreds of trucks are stuck, and prices of essential items like tomatoes and apples have gone up.
