New traffic laws trigger massive rush at Punjab license centres

Web desk: Following the implementation of new traffic rules in Punjab, the province has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of people obtaining driving licenses.

According to the traffic police, over 270,000 citizens accessed various licensing services across the province in just 24 hours.

This is a dramatic rise compared to the usual daily figures. On normal days, around 25,000 to 28,000 licenses are issued.

The recent surge represents a 629 per cent increase. This surge indicates that many citizens are rushing to licensing centres to comply with the updated regulations.

Data released by the authorities shows that more than 100,000 people obtained learner driving licenses. While approximately 28,800 received regular driving licenses.

Additionally, over 78,000 individuals renewed their learner, regular, and international licenses, and more than 15,000 reissued lost licenses, placing significant pressure on the licensing system.

DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir said the strict new laws have heightened citizens’ sense of responsibility, resulting in the unusual rush at license centres.

He advised the public to use the online licensing portal to avoid long queues and save time, noting that the online process is simple and efficient.

The growing interest of the public shows that citizens are taking traffic rules seriously, the DIG added. The new laws have emphasised the importance of discipline and compliance on the roads, as per the DIG.
