US President Donald Trump has praised Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif during the first formal meeting of the Gaza Board of Peace in Washington.

Diplomatic delegations from several countries gathered in the US capital for talks aimed at supporting a ceasefire and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Participants posed for photographs with President Trump at the White House before discussions began.

Praise for Pakistani leadership

In his address, President Trump praised Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, describing him as “a great commander and a tough fighter”.

He said that the Field Marshal had appreciated his efforts to prevent wider conflict in the region.

Mr Trump also thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying he valued his support for ceasefire efforts.

“I like him very much,” the US president said, adding that Pakistan had played a constructive role in promoting stability.

The president further claimed that his administration had helped reduce tensions between Pakistan and India, including through economic pressure.

He said multiple global conflicts had been halted during his leadership and expressed hope that ongoing disputes would also be resolved.

Gaza and regional diplomacy

Speaking about Gaza, Mr Trump said the situation remained complex and criticised Hamas. He said he hoped the group would lay down its arms under a proposed agreement.

He also expressed optimism that progress could be made in talks involving Iran.

The Gaza Board of Peace was formed earlier this year as part of US-led diplomatic efforts to coordinate international support for a lasting ceasefire and long-term reconstruction in Gaza.

According to US officials, countries including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are part of the initiative, alongside other partners.

Aid commitments

President Trump said members of the board had pledged $7bn in assistance for Gaza. He added that the United States would provide $10bn for reconstruction projects.

He also said FIFA would help raise $75m to support development initiatives.

The president said the goal was to create conditions for a stable and properly governed Gaza, while avoiding further military intervention.

He added that participating countries had gathered “for peace” and would continue working together towards that aim.

There was no immediate response from Hamas or Iranian officials regarding the remarks made at the meeting.
