A lawsuit on Friday was filed by the administration of Donald Trump which intensified the confrontation of administration with Harvard University. The lawsuit seeks to recover billions of dollars in federal funding.
According to the case the university had failed to properly protect Israeli and Jewish students from being harassed on the campus.
The US department of Justice issued a complaint in a Boston federal court that deliberate indifference was demonstrated by Harvard university towards incidents of antisemitism.
Trump’s administration alleges that Harvard University neglected its own rules and did not enforce them when Jewish and Israeli students felt harassed. Hence, denying them equal access to educational opportunities.
The allegations have been rejected by Harvard, and the university has vowed to contest the lawsuit.
The spokesperson of the university has described the legal action as retaliatory. They allege that this is part of Trump’s administration broader efforts to pressure elite academic institutions to align with its policies.
According to the university they have taken concrete steps to address antisemitism. The steps include stronger disciplinary mechanisms, enhancing training programs, and adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.
It seems that the lawsuit is a part of a wider campaign by Trump administration which targets major universities over alleged tolerance of antisemitism.
Other than Harvard, University of California and the Columbia University have also faced similar legal challenges and scrutiny.
The Trump administration’s complaint wants the return of federal grants and the suspension of future funding. It also seeks to appoint an independent monitor to oversee Harvard’s compliance.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi and other officials have framed this move as part of a broader push to hold educational institutions accountable.
This will not be the first clash between Harvard and White House. Previously disputes over restrictions on international students, research funding cuts have also arisen.
