US President Donald Trump said he is not interested in holding talks with Iran and suggested the war could end only if the country loses its military power and leadership.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said the ongoing air campaign might make negotiations unnecessary if the attacks destroy Iran’s military and kill its potential leaders.
He said the situation could reach a point where there might be no leaders left in Iran to even announce surrender.
“At some point, there may be nobody left to say ‘we surrender,’” Trump told reporters.
Iran’s president apologises to neighbouring countries
Israel and Iran exchanged many attacks on Saturday as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran entered its second week. Meanwhile, Iran’s president apologised to nearby countries for Iranian strikes on U.S. military facilities in those states, trying to calm tensions in the Gulf. However, his statement drew criticism from hardliners inside Iran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he personally apologised to neighbouring countries that were affected by Iran’s actions. He also asked them not to take part in the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Pezeshkian rejected the demand by U.S. President Donald Trump for Iran’s unconditional surrender and called it “a dream.” However, he said Iran’s temporary leadership council had decided to stop attacks on nearby countries unless those countries allowed their territory to be used for strikes against Iran.
