Two consecutive defeats, can Afghanistan still reach next stage?

After losing two consecutive matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Afghanistan’s cricket team’s journey in the event was extremely difficult.

Afghanistan is currently in third place in Group D with a net run rate of -0.555 per cent. New Zealand and South Africa are in first and second place with four points after playing two matches each.

On Wednesday, Afghanistan faced a very heartbreaking defeat in a double super over against South Africa in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

How can Afghanistan still qualify for next stage?

To qualify for the Super 8 stage, Afghanistan will not only have to win their remaining two matches against UAE and Canada by large margins, but will also have to hope that either South Africa or New Zealand suffer large margin defeats in their remaining two group matches.

If all these conditions are met, Afghanistan can qualify for the next stage by finishing in the top two on the basis of a better net run rate.

In the Group D match, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and invited South Africa to bat first and the Proteas scored 187 runs. In reply, the Afghan team also scored 187 runs, after which the super over took place.

In the first super over, Afghanistan scored 17 runs while batting first, and the South African team could also score only 17 runs. Then in the second super over, South Africa scored 23 runs while batting first, but the Afghan team could score 19 runs and thus the Proteas won by 4 runs.

The Afghan team, led by Rashid Khan, which had earlier lost to New Zealand in its opening match, is now on the verge of exiting the group stage.

To qualify for the Super 8 stage, Afghanistan will not only have to win their remaining two matches against UAE and Canada by large margins, but will also have to hope that either South Africa or New Zealand suffer large margin defeats in their remaining two group matches.
