Two Pakistani Muslims have made history by winning key leadership positions in Cambridge, Massachusetts, underscoring the growing diversity in local politics across the United States.

Karachi-born lawyer Sumbul Siddiqui has won election as mayor for the 2026–27 term, securing her third term in office. Her victory further reinforces her distinction as the first Muslim and Asian woman to serve as mayor of Cambridge.

Meanwhile, Burhan Azim, an MIT-trained engineer from Burewala, has been elected deputy mayor, becoming the youngest city councillor in Cambridge’s history.

Siddiqui first entered office in 2017 and has previously served two mayoral terms. Supporters and community leaders have hailed the election of both Siddiqui and Azim as a significant milestone for Pakistani-American representation and broader inclusion in American governance.
