The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has announced the temporary and full closure of airspace over the United Arab Emirates (UAE), keeping in view the regional security concerns.
The decision was announced in the early hours of March 17, 2026, and comes as tensions continue to rise in the wider Middle East.
Safety concerns
In a statement, the aviation authority described the move as an “exceptional precautionary measure” intended to protect aircraft, flight crews and passengers.
Officials said the step was taken after a detailed review of security and operational risks and in coordination with national and international authorities.
The GCAA said ensuring airspace safety and protecting the country’s territory remain its top priorities.
It added that the situation would continue to be monitored and updates would be provided as needed.
Advice for passengers
Passengers were advised to contact their airlines for the latest information on flight schedules.
The authority said airlines would work with local authorities to arrange accommodation and provide necessary support to travellers affected by the disruption.
Officials also urged the public to rely on information from official sources as the situation develops.
Regional conflict and recent attacks
The announcement comes as tensions continue in the region following the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, air defence systems in the UAE intercepted six ballistic missiles and 21 drones launched from Iran on March 16, 2026.
Officials said the country’s defence forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any potential threats.
Authorities said that since the conflict escalated on February 28, 2026, seven people have been killed and 145 others injured in the UAE.
Those killed include two members of the armed forces and five civilians from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Palestine.
Injuries reported so far range from minor to critical. Officials said the victims include people from several countries, including the UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and others.
The defence ministry said that since the start of the attacks, the UAE’s air defence systems have intercepted 304 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,627 drones.
Officials reaffirmed the country’s readiness to respond to any attempts to threaten national security and said protecting the UAE’s sovereignty and strategic assets remains a priority.
