The United Kingdom has introduced stricter travel and boarding rules for dual nationals as part of updates linked to its electronic border control system.
Here is a step-by-step guide for Pakistani dual nationals.
1. Check Your Citizenship Status
If you are a Pakistani dual national with British citizenship, your legal right to enter and live in the UK has not changed.
However, the documents you must carry have changed.
2. Documents Required to Enter the UK
If You Are a British Citizen (Dual National)
You must carry one of the following:
- A valid British passport
- A qualifying expired British passport (in some cases after Feb 25, 2026)
- A Certificate of Entitlement to the Right of Abode (placed in a non-British passport)
- A UK Emergency Travel Document
A non-British passport alone will no longer be enough unless it contains a Certificate of Entitlement.
If You Do Not Carry a British Passport
If you travel only on your Pakistani passport, you must have:
- A UK visa, OR
- An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) (if eligible)
3. What Is the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) allows eligible visitors to:
- Stay in the UK for up to six months
- Travel for tourism
- Visit family
It is part of the UK’s new digital border system.
4. Important Date: February 25, 2026
From February 25, 2026, the UK Home Office will introduce new carrier-check requirements.
This means:
- Airlines, ferry operators, and Eurostar services must verify British citizenship before boarding.
- They must refuse boarding if they cannot confirm your British status.
- Even visa-waiver passports will not be accepted without proof of British citizenship.
5. Before You Travel: Checklist
Make sure your British passport is valid (or qualifies if expired)
If using a Pakistani passport, ensure it includes a Certificate of Entitlement
Apply for ETA or visa if required
Check airline requirements before departure
