UN investigators are pushing for access to the Minab girls’ school in southern Iran, where a deadly attack at the start of the US-Israeli war reportedly martyred at least 168 people.
According to a member of the UN Fact-Finding Mission to Iran, most of the victims were schoolgirls, some as young as seven. The attack has drawn international concern, and investigators are working to determine who was responsible and what motivated the strike.
The incident, which took place in the southern city of Minab, remains under investigation, with the UN calling for full access to the site to establish the facts.
According to media reports, UN member Du Plessis stated that the organisation is trying to determine who is responsible for the attack, as well as the motives behind it and its legal consequences. “We are still in the early stages of the investigation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the United States has also claimed that it is conducting its own investigation into the attack.
Du Plessis added that, although the UN team has not yet spoken to US officials, they would welcome any information provided. He emphasised, however, that it is the responsibility of the United Nations to establish the facts. He concluded by saying, “We have requested access to Iran and will continue to seek that access.
What happened on Feb 28th
The February 28 attack on a school in the southern Iranian city of Minab was being described as the deadliest incident causing civilian casualties in the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, with 168 students reportedly killed.
No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, according to a report in a foreign media newspaper, satellite images, social media posts and verified videos indicate that the school building was systematically targeted.
The attack occurred while a nearby naval base operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps was also under attack. The report noted that the possibility of the school strike being part of a US operation has increased after US officials acknowledged attacks on naval targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
