The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is facing criticism over its latest press release, which fails to address the presence and operations of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) infrastructure inside Afghanistan.
The critics have questioned the credibility of the report, claiming it reads more like an Al Mirsad, or Umer Media production than an official UN document. They stated that while UNAMA cited figures such as 42 killed, 104 injured, 16,400 households displaced, and 160,000 people affected by a World Food Programme pause, it did not share the evidence or methodology used to reach those conclusions.
The backlash further points to findings by the United Nations Security Council Monitoring Team, which has stated that Afghanistan’s de facto authorities provide a permissive environment for terrorist groups, notably TTP. According to the same reporting framework, TTP is assessed to have around 6,000 fighters and is believed to receive logistical and operational support.
Reports from the Monitoring Team have also noted more than 600 TTP attacks during the reporting period, including operations originating from Afghan territory, as well as alleged financial assistance and the establishment of training centres in provinces such as Kunar, Nangarhar, Khost and Paktika.
The Institute for Economics & Peace, in its Global Terrorism Index 2025 reported 1,081 terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan in 2024, a 45 per cent increase, stating that TTP carried out 482 attacks resulting in 558 fatalities. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies recorded 521 militant attacks in 2024 and 699 in 2025.
As the organisation faces criticism, voices have urged UNAMA to publish verifiable evidence and clearly address alleged TTP infrastructure and sanctuaries. They stated that until such concerns are acknowledged, Pakistan will continue intelligence-based operations to safeguard its citizens.
