US bases in neighbouring states could be targeted if conflict escalates: Abbas Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that United States military bases located in neighbouring countries could become targets if conflict escalates, describing attacks on American interests as a legitimate act of self-defence.

Speaking to the media, Araqchi said Iran has a long history of defending its territory and is fully prepared for any potential confrontation.

“We have defended our land for thousands of years, and we will continue to do so,” he said. “Our army is fully prepared for a ground war. The war was not our choice; it was imposed on us.”

Araqchi also stressed that Iran would not tolerate foreign interference in its internal political matters, particularly regarding the selection of the country’s next Supreme Leader.

“The appointment of the Supreme Leader is completely an internal matter of Iran,” he said. “We reject any foreign interference in this process.

The foreign minister further confirmed that military cooperation between Iran and Russia would continue, describing the defence partnership as part of a long-term strategic relationship between the two countries.

Addressing concerns over Iran’s missile program, Araqchi said Tehran has deliberately limited the range of its missiles.

“We have intentionally kept the missile range below 2,000 kilometres, he stated. “There is no plan to increase the range, and there is no intelligence evidence that we are building long-range missiles.”

His remarks come amid heightened regional tensions involving the United States and Iran, raising concerns about the potential for broader conflict in the Middle East.
