Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh has said it is encouraging that both USA and Iran have shown trust in Pakistan.
In an interview with a US broadcaster, he said Islamabad is ready to play a mediation role in ongoing tensions between Iran and the USA in the broader regional interest.
He said it is encouraging that both sides have shown trust in Pakistan. He added that Islamabad is facilitating dialogue in good faith.
The envoy said the issue is complex, involving political, economic and regional factors. However, Pakistan’s diplomacy has always focused on promoting peace.
He noted that diplomacy is a gradual process that requires time, while final decisions rest with the concerned parties.
Speaking on Afghanistan, he said Pakistan remains the worst affected by cross-border terrorism. He stated that despite repeated identification of militant hideouts, the Afghan authorities failed to take effective action.
He said Pakistan had to take necessary steps to protect its citizens. He also claimed there is evidence of Indian backing for terrorism against Pakistan.
The ambassador reaffirmed that Pakistan believes in dialogue and diplomacy and will continue efforts for peace and stability in the region.
