US relaxes entry rules for Iran ahead of World Cup match against Egypt

The United States has relaxed travel restrictions for Iran’s FIFA World Cup squad, allowing the team to enter the country two days before its upcoming match, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Iran is scheduled to face Egypt on Friday in a crucial World Cup fixture. The move marks a departure from previous arrangements, under which the Iranian team was permitted to enter the United States only one day before its matches.

Despite the relaxation of travel restrictions, the Department of Homeland Security stated that the team will be required to leave the United States immediately after the match.

The Iranian team is set to travel from Tijuana, Mexico, to Seattle. Homeland Security officials noted that for the team’s previous matches, it had only been allowed to enter the United States one day before kick-off.

According to the White House FIFA Task Force, the decision to ease travel restrictions was based on the successful completion of the team’s first two trips.

Previously, the United States had rejected Iran’s request to enter the country two days before its World Cup matches.

It is worth mentioning here that Iran’s national football team had earlier left an emotional handwritten letter in their locker room at Sofitel Stadium following their goalless draw against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The message, addressed to the host city and fans worldwide, expressed gratitude for the hospitality shown in Los Angeles while delivering a powerful appeal for peace, respect, and friendship among nations. According to reports, the letter was written after Iran’s 0-0 draw with Belgium, a result that kept the team’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The note reflected on the team’s journey, challenges, and determination, emphasising that the spirit of Iran remains strong despite difficult circumstances
