The federal government has decided to establish weigh stations across all motorways. The decisions were finalised after two days of negotiations in Islamabad with All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance aimed at resolving long-standing problems faced by the goods transport sector.
The meeting was chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, who is also the convener of the special committee constituted by the Prime Minister to address the concerns of the transporters.
The talks led to the decision to establish a Joint Monitoring Committee comprising representatives of Customs authorities and goods transporters. The committee will help improve coordination between both sides and address problems faced by transporters. They also discussed short term and long term measures to resolve these issues.
In addition, Abdul Aleem Khan directed the relevant authorities to immediately address complaints regarding existing weigh stations. He announced that modern weigh stations would be installed on all motorways. This move is expected to make vehicle weighing more transparent.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwaar, who joined the meeting through video link, assured the transporters of immediate and complete cooperation from his ministry on issues related to maritime affairs.
On the instructions of the Communications Minister, senior officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) also presented recommendations regarding proposals submitted by the goods transporters.
Several proposals related to the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Motorway Police were also discussed during the session.
Abdul Aleem Khan’s policy was supported by the transporters delegation, where they stated that overloading should be controlled at its source through a uniform policy.
