As the temperature drops across Pakistan, the government has announced to extend the winter vacation in schools.

As per details, Azad Kashmir government took the decision yesterday (Sunday), providing big relief to students in severe cold across the valley.

After the extension of winter vacations, the government notified that schools will remain closed till January 17 across Azad Kashmir.

Prior to this, the school vacations started from December 29 and the educational institutes were scheduled to open on January 10.

Schools in Karachi revise timings due to extreme cold

The timings of the schools in Karachi were earlier revised due to extreme cold.

The decision has been announced by the province’s educational minister for private and educational institutions.

Now, the start and dismissal times of schools in Karachi have been extended by one hour.

From Monday, the students in Karachi will go to their schools at 9am.

Winter vacations extended in Punjab

Winter vacations in schools of Punjab were also extended till January 19, 2026, provincial education minister Raja Sikandar Hayat confirmed.

The schools were scheduled to be open on January 12, however, due to extreme cold weather the vacations have been extended on the demands of the parents.

Strict warning issued to schools violating winter vacation orders

The Punjab government has clearly warned both government and private school administrations that any school found operating during the winter vacation period will face strict legal and disciplinary action.

In this respect, the CEO Education Authority Lahore has issued strict orders to ensure full implementation of winter vacations in all government and private educational institutions across the provincial capital. A formal notification has been circulated, clearly stating that no school is allowed to remain open during the holidays.

Earlier Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat had set the record straight and denied that any extension in winter holidays is under consideration.

He said all educational institutions across the province will reopen on January 12 after winter vacations.

However he also conducted a public survey on his twitter account and asked people to vote when the schools should be reopened on January 12 or 19. Most people voted for January 19 due to the extreme cold weather and smog.
