A middle-aged woman lost her life after a sudden surge in the River Jhelum swept her away following an unannounced release of water from the Indian side.

Rahmat Bibi, a widow, was recovered by Rescue 1122 personnel near Pashi Bridge in Muzaffarabad, about 50 kilometres downstream.

The Jhelum River enters Azad Jammu and Kashmir from the Indian-held territory through Chakothi. Its water level normally remains between 12 and 14 feet, but it unexpectedly rose to 19 feet on Friday.

People are advised to stay away from the river when water levels are high and avoid going near the riverbanks.

Pakistan summons Indian envoy

Earlier, Pakistan summoned India’s Chargé d’Affaires over the killing of two Pakistani civilians in the Bedian Sector along the International Border on October 2, 2026.

The Indian diplomat was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, where Pakistan lodged a strong protest over the killing of two Pakistani civilians by personnel of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the BSF used lethal force against the civilians in an unjustified and disproportionate manner. Pakistan rejected any characterisation of the deceased as “infiltrators”.

The Foreign Office said the incident raised serious concerns over the protection of civilian life and constituted a violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life.

Pakistan called on India to conduct an immediate, transparent and credible investigation into the incident and take appropriate disciplinary and legal action against those found responsible.

Islamabad also demanded that India formally communicate the findings of its investigation and the action taken to the Government of Pakistan.
