Following the footsteps of Suryakumar Yadav, India’s women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur skipped the customary handshake with Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana during the toss at the Women’s World Cup.
Kaur walked past the opposing skipper, which has been perceived as disrespectful to the spirit of cricket.
Currently, the match is taking place at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Indian side won the toss and chose to bowl first during Women’s World Cup match.
India and Pakistan women’s teams have faced each other 11 times in One Day Internationals (ODIs), with India winning all 11 encounters, leaving Pakistan yet to secure a victory.
Prior to Sunday’s toss, both captains appeared to avoid any form of contact.
Handshake controversy in Asia Cup
It is pertinent to mention that during the Asia Cup, the Indian captain also didn’t shake hands with Salman Agha, which stirred a lot of controversy.
Yadav also didn’t refrain from making political remarks during the Asia Cup and, in the end, refused to take the trophy from ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Interior Minister of Pakistan.
