Cricket Australia has said that two members of Australian Women’s World Cup has been harassed in India.
The incident took place on Thursday and the next morning Australia defeated England by six wickets in the Women’s World Cup match.
According to reports, they were walking to a cafe in Indore when they were approached by someone on a motorcycle, who touched them inappropriately.
The team had alerted police who then arrested a man.
He has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the criminal code that deal with assault or using criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty and stalking, respectively.
BCCI reacts
Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India Secretary Devajit Saikia said it is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident.
“We appreciate the swift and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused. The law will take its due course to ensure justice is served,” Saikia said.
India is one of the countries with the most rape and harassment cases.
ICC Women’s World Cup matches
The semi-final between Australia and India will take place on October 30th, and the final will take place on November 2nd.
The ICC tournament is being hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka.
