Scientists have announced plans to build the world’s first hotel on the Moon, aiming to make lunar tourism a reality.
World’s first hotel on Moon
A US-based company said it wants to open the hotel by 2032. Space tourists will be able to stay there for around £7.5 million per person.
The project is supported by NASA and private space companies that already operate space stations in Earth’s orbit.
These companies are now working to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon.
The initiative is led by Galactic Resources Utilization (GRU) Space, backed by SpaceX and Nvidia.
The project is seen as a continuation of humanity’s space exploration, which began with the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
A company spokesperson said interested tourists are asked to pay an advance booking of £750,000.
Facilities
In the starting, the hotel will host only four guests at a time. Guests will be able to stay for five nights on the Moon.
The hotel will also have advanced life-support systems.
These include oxygen generation, air and water recycling, temperature control, emergency evacuation, and radiation shelters that will help protect guests from solar rays.
GRU Space founder Skyler Chan said that he believes that humans will become an interplanetary species in his lifetime.
He added that billions of people in the future could experience life on the Moon and Mars.
The company said the main challenge is keeping humans safe during long stays in space.
To solve this, the hotel will carry minimal supplies from Earth while also maximising space on the Moon.
When will it launch
A small prototype will be sent during a test mission in 2029.
A larger mission in 2031 will install an inflatable structure near a deep lunar crater. The hotel is expected to open in 2032.
The company warned that the final ticket price may exceed $10 million. This also shows the complexity and exclusivity of the project.
