The Xiaomi 17 series is yet to make its global debut, but attention has already shifted to what may come next. Fresh leaks from China suggest that Xiaomi is planning meaningful changes for the Xiaomi 18 lineup, with a strong focus on bringing premium features to the standard model for the first time.
According to Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is expected to standardise several high end features across the Xiaomi 18 range. These reportedly include a periscope telephoto camera, a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, wireless charging support, and advanced dust and water protection. While the devices were not named directly, discussions linked to the leak strongly point towards the Xiaomi 18 series.
A major highlight is the camera setup on the base model. If the information proves accurate, the standard Xiaomi 18 will feature a periscope telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom. This would mark a big step up from the Xiaomi 17, which offers a 2.6x telephoto lens. The periscope unit is expected to be similar to the 50 megapixel sensor used on the Xiaomi 17 Pro, allowing clearer zoom shots without heavy digital processing.
Beyond cameras, Xiaomi also appears to be working on improving everyday usability. An ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the display should bring faster and more reliable unlocking, even with wet fingers. Wireless charging and stronger water resistance would further narrow the gap between the regular and Pro models, a common criticism of earlier Xiaomi flagships.
Hints from Xiaomi executives suggest that the Pro version is also getting special attention. Wang Le, director of Xiaomi’s application software department, recently commented on reports about heavy investment in the rear display of the Xiaomi 17 Pro. He suggested that such spending is minor compared with chip development and confirmed that the rear screen concept will continue, likely in the Xiaomi 18 Pro.
As for performance, the Xiaomi 18 series is widely expected to run on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor. Some reports even suggest a new 2 nanometre chip, promising better speed, smoother gaming, and improved battery efficiency. However, details about different chip variants remain unclear at this stage.
With many months still to go before any official announcement, these details should be treated with caution. Early leaks often change, but if accurate, the Xiaomi 18 could mark a shift towards a more balanced flagship lineup where even the standard model feels truly premium.
