US treasury plans $250 note with Trump portrait

'Trump puts off ‘final determination’ on Iran proposal': media reports

The administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly readying plans for a proposed $250 commemorative bank note that would feature Trump’s face.

The administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly making the plans for a $250 commemorative bank note that may include Trump’s face, though there are several legal and legislative hurdles to overcome.

The proposal is based on legislation submitted by South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, to commemorate the US’s 250th birthday.

It is currently illegal, however, for a living person to be featured on US currency, as federal law currently stands.

Furthermore, the federal government has only recognised certain denominations of currency, and a $250 bill does not exist.

In a statement, a US Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed that “preliminary planning and due diligence” is ongoing as a result of the proposed legislation.

The department is anticipating that Congress may approve the measure and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is preparing for it, according to the department.

However, the BEP is already taking a proactive step to create a $250 commemorative note that will suitably celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation should this legislative mandate be enacted, the spokesperson said.

The idea has been criticised by some lawmakers. Senator Mark Warner, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, asked the administration to think about tackling the issue of rising living expenses instead of a new commemorative note.

There are no official design concepts available and currency redesign projects usually take many years of planning and coordinating among federal agencies.

It isn’t clear whether Congress will move on the bill or whether a new $250 note will be minted before the country’s 250th anniversary of its Independence Day.
