Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral house was attacked and petrol bombs were thrown at it yesterday, hours after his first public appearance with ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since her ouster in 2024.
Shakib’s home in Magura, the area is around 170 kilometres southwest of Dhaka, was targeted and upper floors of the house were set ablaze, police said.
It was unoccupied at the time, and no one was injured. Reuters was not able to reach Shakib al Hasan for a comment.
The attack on Shakib’s home came after he joined a virtual event organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi.
Hasina announced that she will come back to Bangladesh where she is still under the death sentence.
Elected as an Awami League lawmaker in January 2024, Shakib has been away from Bangladesh ever since the student-led uprising that ousted Hasina from office.

He’s also under a number of investigations, including murder, fraud, embezzlement and money laundering.
In her speech, Hasina stated that she was ready to be sent to jail or even death when she went back to Bangladesh.
She also appealed to lift the ban on Awami League.
The Bangladesh foreign ministry strongly condemned Hasina’s presence in the media, saying it was “a slap in the face of the sovereignty of the country” and that India’s permission for the event could affect ties between the two nations.
Since August 2024, Hasina, 78, has been living in New Delhi. Bangladesh is seeking her extradition and India has stated that the request is under consideration in light of its laws and procedures.
Hasina’s absence was a key factor in her war crimes tribunal death sentence in November 2025, for the deaths of protesters during the violence that erupted on student demonstrations in 2024.
