Punjab braces for fifth monsoon spell: urban flooding expected

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert for the fifth spell of monsoon rains across the province on Thursday. It has also directed all district administrations to remain alert.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, most districts of Punjab are likely to receive moderate to heavy rain, along with strong winds and thunderstorms. This weather can persist till August 15.

Where will it rain?

Murree, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Wazirabad are expected to receive thunderstorms and rain from today until August 15.

There is also a risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan.

Heavy rainfall may also cause landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas.

PDMA officials said that, on the special instructions of the Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz, all relevant departments and district administrations have been put on alert to deal with any emergency situation.

Citizens have also been advised to stay away from streams, drains and areas where water may collect.

Recently, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), on Wednesday, forecast more rain in several parts of Pakistan from August 12 to 15. Heavy rain can also increase the risk of landslides in hilly areas.

Will it rain on Independence Day, August 14?

According to the PMD, monsoon winds are entering the upper parts of the country. A western weather system is also affecting these areas.

Due to these systems, rain with strong winds and thunderstorms is expected from the night of August 12 until August 15.

This means it might also rain on August 14, 2026, when people are celebrating Independence Day.

Rain is expected in several parts of Azad Kashmir. These include Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Bagh, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.
