Google is officially in Pakistan with exciting news for Pakistani students about a free Google Gemini Plus subscription.
On Thursday, Google Vice President Wilson L. White visited Pakistan and said that the occasion marked the culmination of a long-standing commitment, as Google had been investing in and committed to Pakistan for over a decade, and that the opening of its local office was a very special moment.
Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif unveiled the foundation plaque of Google’s Pakistan office in Islamabad and described it as a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.
On this historic day for Pakistan’s IT industry, the vice president also announced that Google Gemini subscriptions would be made free for students in Pakistan for one year, with a formal announcement to follow later this week.
How can Pakistani students sign up for the free Google Gemini Plus subscription?
Media Coordinator to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Saad Kaiser Khan, said that details about the Google Gemini Plus subscription will be announced later this week.
He also added that with Google now officially opening its operations in Pakistan, the move is expected to significantly benefit the country’s IT industry. It could also support startups and create new business and employment opportunities for the youth.
At the moment, it is not yet clear when Pakistani students will be able to sign up for the free subscription. However, based on Google’s previous student offers, we can get an idea of how the process may work.
Last year, Google offered its AI Pro plan to students in Pakistan aged 18 and above, while a list of eligible universities was also released. Students had to be currently enrolled at an eligible university to claim the offer.
If Google follows a similar system this time, students will likely need a valid Google account and must be studying at an eligible university in Pakistan. They may also need to provide a university email address or student ID to verify their enrollment.
However, this is only a breakdown based on the previous student offer. The formal sign-up process and eligibility criteria for the free Gemini subscription have not yet been officially announced by Google.
It is pertinent to note that the Google Gemini Plus subscription currently costs Rs850 per month in Pakistan. Therefore, eligible students who will get free subscriptions can save a lot of money.
