An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 has been felt in Islamabad and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), including Peshawar, Mardan, Malakand, Swat and areas of Hazara.

According to the earthquake monitoring centre, the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 187 kilometres beneath the surface. Its epicentre was in the Hindu Kush mountain region of Afghanistan.

Tremors were also reported in Mansehra and other parts of Upper Hazara, as well as surrounding areas of Swat.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage following the earthquake.

The tremors were felt across a wide area because of the earthquake’s depth and its location in the Hindu Kush region, a seismically active area where earthquakes are relatively common.

Heavy rain triggers rain emergency in Rawalpindi, Islamabad

Rawalpindi and Islamabad received heavy rain for the second consecutive day, inundating low-lying areas. Shamsabad recorded the highest rainfall at 116 millimetres.

According to details, heavy rain continues in Islamabad, while water levels at Kattarian reached 8 feet and 10 feet at Gawalmandi.

On the directives of Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd.) Nadeem Nasir, WASA Rawalpindi has been placed on high alert due to the rainfall.

A rain emergency has been declared to deal with any emergency situation, while leave for field staff has been cancelled.

The Managing Director of WASA said that staff and heavy machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas. The MD WASA Rawalpindi is present in the field and personally supervising the drainage operation.

Heavy machinery has been deployed in low-lying areas of Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, Dhoke Khabba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad.

Nallah Lai and other drains across the city are being continuously monitored. Water flow in Nallah Lai is currently 10.5 feet at Kattarian and 8.5 feet at Gawalmandi.

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall recorded at various locations includes 3mm in Saidpur, 22mm in Golra, 59mm in Bokra, 47mm at PMD, 115mm in Shamsabad, 26mm in Kacheri, 72mm in Pirwadhai, 59mm in Gawalmandi and 64mm in New Kattarian.

WASA has urged citizens not to throw garbage into drains and sewerage lines and not to remove sewer covers, so that the drainage system can continue operating without interruption.
