FIFA has begun formal disciplinary action against a number of key members of Egypt’s national football team after they made some controversial remarks after their 3-2 loss to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has stated that it is looking into comments by head coach Hossam Hassan, team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Ziko and at the same time FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) are examining statements by the Egyptian players.
Argentina won the match with three goals. The Egyptian camp strongly objected to several decisions made by the referees.

Mohamed Salah was also sent down in the Argentina box and Egypt sought a late penalty, but the referee waved it off.

After the loss, Hossam Hassan allegedly wondered why the match was being officiated to Argentina’s benefit, and Ziko made sarcastic remarks claiming it was “fated”.
The EFA later lodged a formal complaint to have Letexier removed from future fixtures.
In addition, FIFA has already slapped a fine on Egypt goalkeeper coach Saafan Al-Sagheer after he protested against judges during the match.
The cases of Hossam Hassan, Ibrahim Hassan and Ziko are pending, and have not been and no sanctions have been announced against them yet.
The EFA stated it will abide by FIFA’s rules, and will turn in all the legal paperwork within the proper time limits while assisting those subject to proceedings.
It may now be up to the disciplinary procedure to decide if more punishment is handed down to the Egyptian officials and players for their post-match comments.
