Heavy rain in Rawalpindi and Islamabad: emergency declared

Rain, thunderstorms expected in several parts of Pakistan

Heavy rain with strong winds and thunderstorms affected several areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad today. In Islamabad’s G-6 area, some underpasses were filled with rainwater.

In Chatta Bakhtawar, roads and streets were flooded after the heavy rain. Water also entered some houses and caused problems for residents.

The rain also affected electricity supply in different areas. A rain emergency has been declared in Rawalpindi. WASA teams and heavy machinery have been sent to different locations to deal with the situation.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeast Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

Heavy rain is expected at some places. There is also a risk of rising water levels in streams and nullahs.

Meanwhile, a medium-level flood has been reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh. The water flow at the location was recorded at 397,000 cusecs.

Low-level flooding has also been reported at Tarbela Dam, Chashma Barrage, Taunsa, Guddu and Sukkur Barrage.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore, the situation in other rivers across the country remains normal.

Pakistan weather

Rain and thunderstorms are expected in several parts of Pakistan.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of rain, strong winds and thunderstorms in different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The weather is expected to continue until August 23. The authority has also warned of possible urban flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi are likely to receive rain with some areas expected to get heavy showers. Rain is also forecast in parts of Punjab including Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore and nearby areas.

Several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may also receive rain. These include Swat, Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Mardan, Swabi and Peshawar.

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to receive scattered rain and thunderstorms. Some areas may also experience heavy rainfall.

Parts of Balochistan may receive thunderstorms during the evening or night. Most areas of Sindh are expected to remain hot and humid with little or no rain.
