The International Cricket Council (ICC) has fined India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando 25% of their match fees and handed both players one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. The penalties follow a heated exchange between the two players during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka.
According to the ICC, both players were found guilty of violating the code during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka. The incident occurred during the match when Jaiswal and Fernando were involved in a heated exchange. Jaiswal appeared to move towards Fernando during the confrontation, prompting the officials to intervene.
The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The Indian batter walked towards Fernando, and the two exchanged words. Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, who leaned in in response, resulting in the two players’ heads making contact. Both players admitted to the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearings were required.
