A glacier burst in Buner Nallah, Diamer, triggered sudden flooding on Thursday night. It killed dozens of livestock, causing heavy financial losses to local residents.
According to reports, the glacier burst caused damage in Buner Nallah near Chilas. The sudden flow of floodwater created panic among people living in the area.
Dozens of livestock killed in flood
Police said dozens of livestock were killed after being caught in the flood caused by the glacier burst.
Efforts are continuing to locate livestock that may have been swept away or trapped in the area.
The sudden flooding has also raised concerns about the safety of communities living close to glaciers and mountain streams.
Dangerous cracks appear in another glacier
Meanwhile, another concerning situation has emerged in Karliogah, located in Diamer’s Niat Valley.
Dangerous cracks have reportedly developed in a glacier in the area.
According to local sources, part of the glacier burst a day earlier. The incident caused a flood surge that damaged the surrounding area. An artificial lake has also formed following the incident.
People in the area fear that further another glacier burst could cause serious loss of life and property.
Residents are closely monitoring the glacier situation because of the visible cracks and the possibility of further flooding.
Residents seek government action
Local residents of the affected areas have called on the government, district administration and Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) to take immediate precautionary measures.
They have urged the authorities to monitor the glaciers, newly formed lake and take steps to protect communities that could be exposed to further flooding.
Previous flash floods caused damage in Diamer
Previously, a strong cloudburst triggered flash floods in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, causing destruction in Thore Valley. At the same time, rapidly melting glaciers had raised water levels in rivers and streams across the region.
According to local authorities, the floods had damaged several homes, hundreds of acres of farmland, orchards, trees, and infrastructure.
Link roads and communication bridges had also been washed away. Several villages had been cut off, while dozens of families had been left homeless.
The floods had also disrupted electricity and water supply systems in the affected areas.
The Wapda Colony, established for workers involved in the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project, had also been flooded.
