Web desk: The Lahore High Court has issued a directive preventing the immediate arrest of underage drivers for traffic violations.
Chief Justice Alia Neelum took notice of the matter, emphasising that public awareness campaigns should be conducted before taking action against minors.
The court instructed that first-time offenders operating motorcycles or cars should receive a warning, and legal action should only follow in case of repeated violations.
The order comes after a large-scale crackdown on underage driving and other traffic violations was carried out in Gujranwala under special instructions from the Chief Traffic Officer.
Traffic wardens set up checkpoints at various locations in Nowshera Virkan and central chowks, targeting unlicensed riders and those not wearing helmets.
Dozens of motorcyclists were detained for riding without licenses or helmets, and several motorcycles were impounded.
Wardens stressed that underage driving not only violates the law but also significantly increases the risk of accidents due to parental negligence.
Following the operation, large crowds of parents and citizens gathered outside Nowshera Virkan police station, requesting the return of their children and the seized motorcycles.
Wardens appealed to parents not to allow minors to ride motorcycles and to prioritise their children’s safety, warning that repeated violations could result in legal action against both children and parents.
The Lahore High Court’s new order represents an important step toward implementing a policy of warnings and public awareness for underage drivers. It is aimed at protecting lives and property in the future.
