The mystery surrounding an alleged childbirth at a private hospital in Karachi’s Nazimabad area has taken a dramatic turn, with the woman telling police that she was not pregnant and had obtained a fake ultrasound report. According to media reports, police said the woman got married in 2024 and later suffered a miscarriage. She allegedly came under family pressure following the miscarriage and subsequently pretended to be pregnant.
Police said the woman would visit the hospital for ultrasounds but never showed the reports to a doctor. During the investigation, the ultrasound report shown to hospital staff on her mobile phone was found to be inauthentic. The medical examination and medico-legal officer (MLO) report also failed to establish that the woman had been pregnant.
Investigators have also found serious negligence on the part of the hospital’s doctor and staff. According to police, the woman was taken to the operation theatre without undergoing the necessary medical tests. The doctor told police that there was no baby in the woman’s womb during the procedure. He said the woman had arrived at the hospital as an emergency case and was receiving regular treatment at another hospital.
Investigators are now examining how an operation was carried out if the woman was not pregnant and why the necessary tests were not conducted beforehand. Police have recorded statements from the doctor and hospital staff and obtained details of the woman’s medical tests. Medical reports, CCTV footage and other relevant records have also been included in the investigation.
Police said further action would be taken on the complaint of the woman’s husband against the hospital. Officials added that even if it is established that the woman was not pregnant, the hospital, doctors and other relevant officials could face legal action. The medical report is expected to help determine the facts of the case and establish whether the doctor’s position was correct.
The incident had earlier triggered a dispute after the woman’s family alleged that the newborn had gone missing due to negligence by the hospital administration. Hospital staff, however, maintained that the woman had not been pregnant at all.
