Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to launch an anti-encroachment operation in Islamabad’s posh Sector E-11 after heavy rainfall triggered urban flooding, sending rainwater into houses and basements and causing serious difficulties for residents.
Heavy machinery has started reaching E-11 as authorities prepare to remove encroachments reportedly obstructing stormwater drains in the area.
The action comes after a spell of heavy rain hit Islamabad, leaving several roads and residential areas waterlogged.
Residents of E-11 reported that rainwater entered houses and basements, creating problems for families and damaging property.
Encroachments on stormwater drains in E-11
According to residents living in the area shops and other structures have been constructed on or near stormwater drainage channels in parts of E-11
Due to these illegal structures, the drainages become blocked and are unable to carry rainwater especially during intense rainfall. Due to this water accumulates and entering nearby residential and commercial properties.
Heavy machinery reaches E-11
Heavy equipment has started arriving in the affected area ahead of the planned anti-encroachment operation.
The machinery is expected to be used to remove illegal structures and clear stormwater drains to restore the natural flow of rainwater.
The operation follows reports of urban flooding in E-11 after Tuesday’s heavy rainfall in the federal capital.
Residents have called on the authorities to take permanent measures rather than temporary action after every major spell of rain.
They have demanded that stormwater drains be cleared and protected from future encroachments to prevent similar flooding during the monsoon season.
