The Establishment Division has rejected proposals to increase the upper age limit and number of attempts allowed for Central Superior Services (CSS) examination. The existing policy will remain in place.
The general age range for CSS candidates is 21 to 30 years, while candidates can make a maximum of three attempts.
Proposed CSS reforms rejected
A subcommittee of the parliamentary Standing Committee had discussed possible changes to Pakistan’s civil service recruitment system. It recommended increasing the maximum age from 30 to 35 years.
The Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat had also proposed increasing the number of CSS attempts from three to five.
However, the Establishment Division rejected the recommendations and described them as impractical. It also submitted its written position on the matter to the parliamentary committee.
The division said decisions about the CSS age limit and number of attempts fall within the federal government’s policy-making authority.
The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) implements the policy approved by the federal government.
The FPSC decided at its 174th meeting to maintain the existing policy.
Why were the proposals rejected?
The Establishment Division gave several reasons for opposing the changes to the existing policy.
It said raising the age limit could increase the number of people appearing in CSS examinations. This would increase the administrative burden of conducting the exams and checking answer papers.
The division also argued that allowing five attempts could encourage candidates to spend several productive years repeatedly preparing for and appearing in the examination.
Another concern involved the length of an officer’s government service. Candidates entering the civil service at an older age would have fewer years available to serve before retirement.
This could affect the future availability of experienced officers for senior government positions. Some officers entering later could be around 37 or 38 years old by the time they take up field assignments.
The Establishment Division also raised concerns that a higher age limit could benefit candidates who can financially afford to spend more years preparing for CSS.
Candidates preparing for upcoming CSS examinations should continue following the existing rules unless the federal government formally announces and notifies any future changes.
CSS MPT date changed
Previously, the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has changed the date of the MCQ Preliminary Test (MPT) for the CSS Competitive Examination 2027.
According to an official public notice issued by FPSC, the CSS 2027 MPT will now be conducted on October 10, 2026 (Saturday).
The examination was previously scheduled to take place on September 27, 2026 (Sunday).
The latest notification has been issued in continuation of an earlier FPSC public notice dated August 2, 2026.
