Islamabad United head coach Mike Hesson has pointed out that he has nothing to do with the changes that have been made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in recent times, especially with the departure of former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul.
Hesson spoke about it in the wake of the growing rumours of cricket reform in Pakistan. He has stated that it is the PCB and their appointed officials’ decision to make regarding the national team, ranging from changing the coaching staff to the selection of the captain to the choice of players.
The New Zealand coach explained that he is mainly just committed to his operational capabilities.
Hesson said he is still in contact with many people from within the Pakistan cricket system, but warned that such contact should not be seen as “being part of the administration of the national team”.
The changes have included some speculation about the people involved in the restructuring and it has been reported that Hesson was a part of the discussions about the restructuring and was considered a possible candidate to replace Sarfaraz. The Islamabad United coach denied any involvement in their ousting, however.
Hesson also expressed his gratitude to Sarfaraz and Gul for their contribution to the Pakistan cricket team. Sarfaraz, who spearheaded Pakistan’s success in the 2017 Champions Trophy, is one of the more prominent cricket figures of the nation while Gul has played for and coached Pakistan.
The explanation follows a host of arguments being raised by cricket analysts and fans concerning the path of Pakistan cricket and the many changes in the national team.
Hesson’s separation from PCB affairs was an attempt to put the speculations to bed concerning his involvement with the personnel decisions of the national team.
Hesson is now focusing on Islamabad United’s preparations and performance. The PCB and its nominated selectors will meanwhile remain in charge of the national side, which covers player selection, the appointment of leadership and coaches.
