The Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), through its Space Applications Center for Climate Sciences (SACCS), will host the fourth Regional Symposium on the theme “Space4Climate – Coastal Dynamics, Mangroves and Sea Water Intrusion, Drought & Heatwave Hazard Assessment, Waterways Dynamics, Land Cover Dynamics, and Crop Monitoring” on 8 September 2026 at PC Hotel, Karachi.
The event will bring together policymakers, scientists, researchers, development partners, academics, and industry leaders to explore the transformative role of space technologies in addressing Pakistan’s climate challenges.
Three symposiums were successfully held in Peshawar, Gilgit, and Lahore on 23 July 2026, 5 August 2026, and 27 August 2026, respectively.
Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, facing increasing risks from floods, droughts, heatwaves, deforestation, deteriorating air quality, coastal erosion, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and changing weather patterns. Against this backdrop, the symposium underscores the growing importance of indigenous space capabilities in providing timely, accurate, and actionable information for climate adaptation and risk reduction.
The symposium will serve as a national platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on the use of satellite-based Earth observation, geospatial technologies, and climate intelligence to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, enhance disaster resilience, and support sustainable development.
A key highlight of the symposium will be a presentation on Space4Climate, SUPARCO’s national climate intelligence initiative, along with a live demonstration of Climate Portals. The initiative leverages Pakistan’s satellite assets, including PRSS-1 and hyperspectral satellite capabilities, to monitor essential climate variables and environmental indicators.
The initiative provides near-real-time information on greenhouse gases, air quality, glaciers, GLOFs, forests, water resources, land cover, coastal ecosystems, and other climate-sensitive domains, supporting informed decision-making at the national and provincial levels.
The symposium aligns with national climate priorities while supporting global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. It also reflects SUPARCO’s continued commitment to harnessing space science and technology for peaceful applications that contribute to national development and environmental sustainability.
