Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem has withdrawn from the javelin throw competition at the 35th National Athletics Championship in Karachi after falling ill.

The star athlete was expected to compete on Friday (today), but pulled out at the last moment due to health problems.

Reportedly, Nadeem is suffering from gastroenteritis and stomach discomfort, making it difficult for him to participate in the event.

Arshad Nadeem attended the championship’s opening ceremony at NED University in Karachi on Thursday, October 22.

He lit the ceremonial flame, marking the start of the national athletics competition, during the ceremony.

However, his health worsened, forcing him to withdraw from the javelin throw event.

He was scheduled to compete at 11:00 am on Friday (today), but his illness prevented him from taking part.

Moreover, Nadeem has faced fitness challenges in the past, which have affected his preparations and performances at major international competitions.

His performances at the World Athletics Championships and the 2026 Asian Games in Japan were also described as below expectations.

The latest illness is another setback for the athlete, who remains one of Pakistan’s most successful sporting figures.

Nadeem made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning Pakistan’s first individual Olympic gold medal. He secured the title with a remarkable javelin throw of 92.97 metres, setting a new Olympic record.

His achievement brought international recognition to Pakistan and inspired young athletes across the country.

Although he will not compete in Karachi, his appearance at the opening ceremony was an important moment for the championship.
