The Postgraduate College of Nursing in Hayatabad has been closed until September 12 following unrest and concerns over the security situation, the college administration said.
According to a notification issued by the administration, classes at the college have been suspended, and students have been ordered to vacate the hostel.
The administration said students and outsiders had once again gathered at the college’s main gate. It said the administration made the decision to close the institution over concerns that the gathering could damage college property.
The situation follows a protest held at the college on September 7, when students demonstrated in support of their demands. The protest reportedly turned tense after clashes and alleged police violence against students.
FIR registered against 26 students
Police have registered an FIR against 26 students in connection with the incident at the nursing college.
The FIR includes charges related to allegedly harassing and threatening teachers, disrupting the security situation and taking the law into their own hands.
The authorities have also formed a three-member high-level committee, headed by the Special Secretary Health, to investigate the incident. The committee has been directed to complete its inquiry and submit a report within one day.
Health minister orders inquiry
Khyaliq-ur-Rehman, the provincial health minister, has also taken notice of the students’ complaints and directed authorities to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.
He said strict action would be taken in accordance with the law once those responsible for any wrongdoing were identified.
The minister urged the students not to take the law into their own hands and to trust the authorities, assuring them that no injustice would be allowed regarding their legitimate rights.
“Students should focus on their education and training, while their legitimate complaints will be addressed,” the minister said.
He also directed the district police officer to review the situation and take steps to resolve the dispute peacefully.
The minister said peaceful protest was the right of every citizen but stressed that protesters must comply with the law.
He added that law and order and the daily lives of other citizens should not be disrupted during protests.
The minister urged both students and the college administration to exercise restraint and resolve the matter through dialogue.
