A University of Karachi professor was allegedly assaulted after a double-cabin vehicle hit the online taxi he was travelling in near Safoora Chowrangi in Karachi, according to reports on Tuesday.
Arif Saqi is the chairperson of the KU Department of Islamic Learning. He said that he was travelling to the university when the incident took place.
According to Saqi, the double-cabin vehicle was leaving a parking area when security guards signalled the taxi to stop.
He said the vehicle then moved backwards and hit the taxi. The collision damaged the vehicle. Saqi said he asked the people in the double-cabin to pay for the damage caused to the taxi.
According to the professor, the son of a local hotel owner then came out of the vehicle and fired two shots. “He hit me with apistol butts and also carried out aerial firing,” Saqi said.
What action has police taken?
Police have detained three employees of a local hotel in connection with the alleged assault. Officials said that efforts were underway to arrest other people who may have been involved.
Police also confirmed that a case was registered at Sachal police station on Saqi’s complaint against Kunein Ali Gohar Shah and others.
The FIR includes charges related to attempted murder, assault, causing injuries and wrongful confinement.
Sindh government seeks report
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has asked the SSP East to submit a detailed report on the alleged assault and illegal confinement of the university professor.
The home minister said the safety and dignity of teachers would be protected at all costs. He also said action would be taken against those found responsible under the law. The SSP East said legal action would be taken against all three detained suspects.
