WhatsApp is introducing a new Events hub that allows users to create, view and manage their events from one place.
The feature is currently available to some beta testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.36.5. Users can find the new option in the app’s Settings menu.
All events in one place
Previously, users had to search through individual chats and groups to find events they had created or joined.
The new Events hub brings everything together on a single page. Users can see events they created as well as invitations they received. WhatsApp is also adding a badge to the Settings menu to help users spot the new feature.
Create events from Settings
Users can now create an event directly from the Events hub by selecting the Create event option.
They can add an event name, description, start and end times, location and a WhatsApp call link. Users can also set reminders, with WhatsApp offering one hour before the event as the default option.
The feature also lets hosts allow guests to bring another person and add a cover photo to the event.
Users can still create events directly inside individual chats and groups.
Invite people without WhatsApp
Another useful addition allows event hosts to invite people who do not have a WhatsApp account.
WhatsApp can create a shareable invitation link for an event. Anyone with the link can view basic details such as the event name, date and time.
People without WhatsApp can respond by entering their name and verifying their phone number. Once they confirm attendance, they can view additional information such as the location and call link.
WhatsApp adds privacy controls
WhatsApp says guests and the company may be able to see basic event details, including the event name, date, time, location, cover photo and guest list.
Hosts can view each guest’s name, response and phone number. Confirmed attendees can also see the names and responses of other guests, while phone numbers remain hidden unless the person is already saved as a contact.
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls will continue to use end-to-end encryption.
